Experience
The work
Power systems work in the places where the consequences of being wrong are expensive or worse: nuclear generation, heavy industry, and the utility interfaces between them.
Practice areas
-
Substation and plant grounding
Grid design and analysis to IEEE 80 — ground potential rise, touch and step potentials, gradient control. Inductive coupling to nearby structures under IEEE 367, and CDEGS modelling where the geometry stops being simple.
-
Protection & coordination
Relay settings, selectivity studies, arc-flash incident energy, and protective-device isolation. ETAP and SKM for the modelling; the code books and the manufacturer's curves for the answer.
-
Power distribution design
Load flow, short circuit, cable and bus sizing, pad-mounted and unit substation transformers, medium-voltage cable systems, and the raceway and cable-tray design that carries it all.
Tooling
ETAP · SKM PowerTools · CDEGS · AutoCAD · and a growing set of small purpose-built calculators, some of which are on the tools page.
Consulting
KM Engineering takes on power distribution, grounding, protection and coordination studies, and control systems work. If you have a problem that needs a study rather than a rule of thumb, get in touch at kmbina@gmail.com.
