Which IEEE 1584 edition is your arc flash study using?
The 2018 revision changed the model, not just the wording. A study built on the 2002 equations can land in a different PPE category.
IEEE 1584 was substantially revised in 2018. The 2002 edition used a single empirical equation set derived from a limited test programme. The 2018 edition is based on a much larger body of testing and models several electrode configurations explicitly.
Why it matters in practice
The two editions can produce materially different incident energy for the same equipment, and the difference does not run consistently in one direction. A result that sits comfortably inside one PPE category under the older model can move to the next under the newer one, or the reverse.
That means the edition is not a footnote. It belongs on the label, in the report, and in whatever the AHJ or the client asked for.
What to check on an existing study
- Which edition the software used, and whether that was chosen or defaulted.
- Whether electrode configuration was specified, since 2018 requires it.
- Whether the clearing times came from the coordination study as currently set, or from an older revision of it.
Point three catches more problems than the first two. Incident energy depends directly on clearing time, so any change made to gain selectivity has already changed the arc-flash result whether or not the study was re-run.
